It is more important for schoolchildren to learn about local history than world history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
IELTS Writing Sample 2 – Learn about local history than world history
History, the study of what happened to our ancestors, our countries and communities in the past, is very important because it allows us to have a complete understanding of the world around us. Regarding how to best educate this subject, many people argue that there is a greater importance in teaching local history, rather than world history, to pupils at primary and secondary levels. I, on the other hand, firmly believe that it is world history that should play the most significant role in the history education of these age groups.
The first reason why world history should be emphasized is that it helps young students to be more aware of the differences between communities and regions. As the world becomes increasingly connected thanks to globalization, a better awareness of the reasons why we behave, believe and act differently from one another could help us cooperate and solve our conflicts better together. Because a large part of what makes us who we are is shaped by global events in the past, such as invasions, migrations, or the spread of religions, studying this subject well since a young age can help our children grow to be good global citizens in the future.
Another reason why it is world history that should be highlighted is that studying this also allows us to perceive the similarities between different groups of people. Sentiments like patriotism, love, kindness and sympathy are reflected in ancient stories of all communities, from Native Americans to Southeast Asians. Studying these lores will help the young to have another perspective when viewing international issues, which is: there are characteristics that all humans have in common. This is a great lesson that all young people should learn in order to become kind human beings who have sympathy for others.
In conclusion, it is my belief that there should be a greater emphasis on world history than local history in schoolchildren’s education, because of two main reasons: it helps them to learn about and appreciate our differences, while at the same time it encourages them to be more aware of our similarities. Since the young students today are the ones who will run our world tomorrow, they should study world history more than their local history to become better citizens of the world in the future.
